What happened to the Vikings when the Viking Age ended?
In the year 1075, the 16-year-old boy Ansgar flees his Christian and abusive father to join the Danish fleet, which has been summoned to aid Lady Emma in Norwich during the “Rebellion of the Earls.”So begins The Gift, a story that spans 30 years and half the world. Kings and towns existed as described – the saga is based on actual history – and it tells how the Vikings fought the onslaught of Christianity. The Christian religion was introduced into Scandinavia for reasons that were not predominantly spiritual in nature. You could no longer argue and speak with the gods yourself in the fields – but had to enlist a priest and go to church at a set time. This, of course, fitted those who had political ambitions, because the priests could be enrolled to convey whatever messages were deemed suitable. But the new way of life wasn’t for everybody – this is their story.
